MARY (MAMIE) BROWN MCCLELLAND (4/18/1920--1/17/17))

I always called her Mary. I have many fond memories of my times with Mary and her husband Jim McClelland.  She was always very thoughtful and kind.

I first really got to know Mary when I attended Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in the Fall of 1962 after I graduated from Penn State.  She invited me to her home for a meal one evening and  I still remember the dessert---half of a mellon with the center full of vanilla ice cream.  I  never had anything like it and even today I can still taste that wonderful treat.  That was the same time Jim took me canoeing on the river, which gave me a love for the sport I have pursued my entire life.

Later in 1979 when our family decided to take a trip out West, we stopped at Mary and Jim's  place in Silver City, New Mexico. She was a wonderful hostess and made arrangements for us see the sights in the area.  The first night she and Jim took us to a real Mexican restaurant---our first experience with actual "hot" food.

One day Mary took us to a ranch and the owner saddled up one of his horses and our 3 kids had an opportunity do some horseback riding.

Another time she took us into the mountains where we saw a Golden Eagle and panned for gold.

Several years later on a trip to Florida, we visited with she and Jim  at their home in Sebring,  I remember a day excursion to nearby Highland Hammock State Park.  By that time jim had equipped his canoe with a sail and he took us for a ride in his sail canoe.
